This is an official contract for the April 1, 1972 fight between Muhammad Ali and Mac Foster which Ali won a 15 round unanimous decision. There are multiple contracts for the fight when they are proposed that are given out to the promoter, lawyers, the boxing commission and more depending on the venue. This is one of those contracts
The first page is the articles of agreement, the Official boxing contract to the Japan Boxing Commission and is dated August 9, 1971. This is the agreement to the fight between the promoter Prime Organization International Co Ltd and Muhammad Ali. The contract states that the fight will take place on April 1, 1972 in Tokyo, Japan and Ali will be paid $200,000, the promoter will supply transportation from New York-Tokyo-New York and supply room and board for 10 people for 30 days and not to exceed the sum of 10,000 yen (approx $120) per person per day. Neither Ali or Foster can weigh less that 176 lbs for the fight. The boxer agrees to make his presence available no less that 14 days prior to the above agreed date of contract. There are other provisions about rules, fouls, protective cup and rules to protect the Japan Boxing commission of any liability in this bout. The front page is a yellow rice paper material and is signed by the Prime Organization International president Akira Hida and the Chief producer Yoshio Kou.
There are two contracts that are written by Chauncey Eskridge who was the legal counsel for Dr Martin Luther Kings and was with him in the Memphis, Tennessee motel when he was assassinated, he also represented Ali in th early 70's for his evading the draft charge for the Vietnam war.
The first one is dated December 20,1971 and is written to Mr, Kou that he has received $50,000 to be held in escrow for the following purposes.
That they receive a letter-committment form Herbert Muhammad for the bout.
There are nine other provisions he wrote about the financial arrangements.
The second one is a rice paper material and again it is to Mr. Kou and is a proposed letter fo credit for their bank. There will be a $120,000 payment on April 3, 1972 as long as the fight takes place is transferred to Amalgamated Trust and savings Bank of Chicago, in favor of Muhammad Ali and Herbert Muhammad.
A letter from Prime Organization Internationals Chief Producer Yoshio Kou that confirms reservations for 15 rooms at the Hotel Okura from March 6th to April 10th.
A letter dated April 11, 1972 from the promoters President Akira Hida to Muhammad Ali c/o Robert Arum confirming payment of $160,000 in actual funds and $40,000 to the Japanese Government for income tax.
A letter from Mr. Arum confirming this fact.
This was for a proposed fight between Ali and Jimmy Young which would have been a rematch as Ali had just defeated Young by a 15 round unanimous decision on April 30th two months earlier or a suitable opponent to be agreed upon by Herbert Muhammad, in Sydney, Australia at a time and place to be determined, after December 31, 1976. The sum of payment to Ali was $2,800,00 U.S. Currency plus percentage.
There are eight provisions to the fight such as how the money transfers work, transportation, they have to make their own contract with Ali's opponent, ringside tickets to be supplied and more.
This contract was sent to Mr. Igal Markler and Mr. Wayne Garland of Inter Sports Inc. & Associates in Sydney Australia.
Ali never fought outside of the U.S until his last fight in 1981 vs Trevor Berbick in the Bahamas so whatever reason this fight never took place.
Herbert Muhammad and Ali have signed the second page of this contract.
This is a boxing contract that was made up on February 28, 1974 between Madison Square Garden, Inc, Top Rank, Inc, Muhammad Ali and Jerry Quarry for a proposed 12 round fight between Ali and Quarry on May 13, 1974 at Madison Square Gardens. This would have been the third meeting between the two as Ali had defeated Quarry on his return to the ring after his exile in November , 1970 and again in June, 1972.
There is a stipulation written on the last page of this contract that if George Foreman defeated Ken Norton on March 26, 1974 this contract is null and void, Foreman knocked out Norton in the 2nd round thus voiding this contract.
There are eight pages with fourteen different paragraphs of rules that the parties would agree upon.
Bob Arum wrote and signed it on the back page of this contract " or M.A is gart $ 2,000,000 or over for another opponent"
Some of the details are Ali was to get 40 % and Quarry 22 1/2 % interests in the gross proceeds derived from the live gate and from net ancillary revenue shall not be less than $800,000 and $250,000 respectively.
The other paragraphs cover the usual training expenses ($ 25,000 each), ringside tickets for each party, what the minimum time they are to arrive in New York before the bout, that they agree on the New York State Athletic Commission will appoint the referee and judges for the fight and a lot more on the rules for each fighter and the legal protection of all the parties involved.
The last page has the hand written rule about the fight being cancelled if Foreman defeats as he did Norton and is also signed by Bob Arum representing Top Rank and Muhammad Ali.
On the back page there is a hand written note from and signed by Bob Arum stating that if Foreman defeats Norton as he did and M.A ( Ali ) is gauranteed $ 2,000,000 or more for another opponent, the date and venue can still go on. Ali did not fight again that year until he met and defeated Foreman in September.
This was a Memorandum sent to Jack W Urch by Clayton W Frye Of the State of California Athletic commission showing the Superior Court Order approving the contract between Cassius Clay, jr and the Louisville Sponsoring group as there managers on November 22, 1960 that was filed on October 26 of that year.
There are also photostatic copies of the Superior Court Order # 758400 petition for order approving a contract of a minor which Cassius under the age of 21 was when he signed on with the Louisville group.
Some interesting reading they actually had January 30, 1942 as Ali's birth date when he was born on the 17th.The split on purses was 50-50 and others about all the stipulations in the contract.
The contract was witnessed by his brother Rudy and was also signed by his father Cassius,Sr and his mother Odessa with Cassius being a minor.
